Audubon strongly supports properly-sited wind power as a clean alternative energy source that reduces the threat of global warming. Wind power facilities should be planned, sited and operated to minimize negative impacts on bird and wildlife populations.

For years environmentalists have been touting the benefits of generating electricity from pollution-free wind power. As the threats of climate change loom ever larger, alternative energy sources like wind power are essential. New Guidelines a Step Forward for Bird-Friendly Wind Development

What do wind turbines and home prices have in common? Location, location, location.

America needs energy from every safe source possible, but wind power creates unique threats to birds. So it was a big deal when Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced new wind energy siting guidelines today that will help us reduce our dependence on fossil fuels while protecting wildlife.

A Blueprint for Eagle Conservation

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has developed a draft Eagle Conservation Plan Guidance document which specifies how it will work with the wind industry to ensure that new wind farm facilities are in compliance with the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

Testimony of Mike Daulton, Director of Conservation Policy: (excerpt):  "At the same time, it is critical that this expansion be managed responsibly, because it is clear that wind facilities are capable of killing a large number of birds and other wildlife. Some early wind projects like Altamont in California are notorious for killing many raptors, including Golden Eagles. The lessons learned from Altamont still loom over the industry: if wind turbines are located in the wrong places, they can be hazardous and they can fragment critical habitat."

Acknowledging the important potential of wind power (as well as other renewable energy sources) to combat the threat of climate change to the survival of bird species throughout the western hemisphere does not mean we are providing a blanket endorsement. Every wind power proposal demands thorough case-by-case analysis of both its benefits and impact, and how that lines up against the potential widespread harm from climate change.
